You didn't learn racism from a book.

So taking apart the internalized racism and anti-Blackness you carry — consciously or not — was always going to require intentional action.

Internal change happens by taking action often enough that it becomes habit. That's integration: embodying what you already know instead of just naming it.

Raise a Human Being: The Integration Kit helps you implement the things you read about in the free Raise a Human Being, Not a Racist Prick guide and some of the other texts you may have read on your journey.

It is not enough to say "I'm not racist." Being an anti-racist is about embodying the knowledge you are acquiring.

Something gets said at the dinner table. You heard it. Your child heard it. And you sat there running through six versions of a response while the moment closed over your head.

Then you were angry at yourself for days and downloaded another book about it.

But that is not a solution. You have done the reading — you're learning the history, you can define the terms. And you still went quiet. Why?

Here is the disconnect:

Nobody sat you down and taught you a doctrine of racial hierarchy. That's not how racism got embedded in your mind. It got in through a thousand small things nobody flagged as a lesson — which streets the car went around instead of through, who got called "articulate," what got said about Black hair, Black names, and Black culture in general. And most of all, what happened at home when something racist got said and not one adult flinched.

Racism is learned through practice and repetition, and it is unlearned the same way: by calling it out, by saying the uncomfortable (but right) thing out loud, and by staying in community with people who can tell you when you're misstepping.

As a fourth-generation diviner, I can tell you with confidence that decolonizing your mind is spiritual work.

Knowing anti-racist concepts and integrating anti-racist actions into your daily life are two different things. This kit helps you with the integrating.

What's Inside

The Scripts
What to actually say, by age. This will be guidance on what to say to the grandparent, the neighbor, the kid who asked something at the worst possible time, and the moment you already blew last month.

The Lexicon
An audit of the language already living in your house. We unpack the words you inherited and never examined, and discuss what they're doing to your child(ren) when you're not around.

The Practice Pages
This is where you sit with what comes up within you as you are unlearning and integrating so you can be a better guide for your child(ren). You will get structured journaling prompts, including "The Silence Audit" which helps you analyze the last three times you went quiet in the face of racism, and how to respond differently in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a reading list?

No. Reading, listening and watching lists can be found in the free guide you've already downloaded.

Do I have to be religious?

No. When I say "spiritual work," I mean the part of you that acts instinctively, before you've made a mental decision to act. That's what has to change, and action-based practice is the only thing that will ever change the beliefs you've inherited.
